1. Introduction
Welcome to Unhook. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring that your personal data is handled securely and transparently. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information across our Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux applications.
Unhook is operated by Adam Wawrzynski (tax ID: 5842823905), located at Starowiejska 67C/99, 80-534 Gdańsk, Poland.
2. Data We Collect
To provide our digital wellbeing services, we collect the following types of information:
- Personal Information: Email address (provided during waitlist signup or account creation).
- App Usage Data: We monitor package names of applications you use, session durations, open counts, and timestamps of app interactions. This data is synchronized across all your connected devices to provide a comprehensive view of your total app usage and overall screen time. This is essential for identifying scrolling patterns and enforcing blocks globally.
- Notification Data: We track the number of notifications received per application (package name), including timestamps of notification events. This data is aggregated into daily statistics and synchronized across your devices to provide insights into notification-driven usage patterns.
- Event & Analytics Data: We collect information about how you interact with Unhook, such as page views, button clicks, and specific actions performed within the app. This helps us understand which features are most valuable to our users.
- Technical Logs & Crash Reports: We use services like Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymized logs in the event of an application crash. This includes technical data such as device model, OS version, and stack traces to help us fix bugs and improve stability.
- Wellbeing Data: Mood logs, emotional triggers, and digital detox challenge progress that you voluntarily provide within the app.
- Device Information: Unique Device ID, manufacturer, model, and operating system type to facilitate cross-platform synchronization.
3. What We Do NOT Collect
Your private content remains private. We do NOT collect, read, or store:
- The content of your messages or emails.
- The content of your notifications (text, images, or any personal data contained within a notification).
- Passwords or any login credentials for other applications.
- Your browsing history or specific website content.
- Financial information or credit card numbers.
- Your contacts or gallery photos.
Our blocking and tracking mechanisms are based on application metadata (package names and counts), not on reading the private content displayed or received within those applications.
4. Required Permissions and Core Functionality (Android)
To provide its core digital wellbeing services, Unhook requires specific Android permissions. These are essential for the application to function as intended:
Usage Access
Purpose: This permission allows Unhook to collect information about app usage patterns.
Function: We use this data to provide you with detailed statistics, comparisons, and insights into time spent on individual applications. This helps identify problematic behavior patterns and supports your digital detox journey.
Display Over Other Apps (Overlays)
Purpose: This permission allows Unhook to display screens over other applications.
Function: We use overlays to show mindful delay screens before you open a problematic app, feedback screens after usage, or blocking overlays to prevent access to manually restricted apps. These interventions are crucial for gathering user feedback on interactions and enforcing your chosen limits.
Accessibility Service API
Purpose: Monitoring foreground activity.
Function: In conjunction with the above permissions, this API helps us detect exactly when a restricted app is launched to trigger blocks or delays in real-time. We do NOT collect or transmit any sensitive personal data (passwords, keystrokes, messages) via this service.
Notification Access (Notification Listener Service)
Purpose: Tracking the number of incoming notifications per application.
Function: This permission allows Unhook to count notification events to provide you with digital wellbeing statistics and reports. This requires manual activation in system settings. We only collect metadata (package name and count) and never the content of the notifications.
These permissions are mandatory for the application to provide support, insights related to app usage, and pattern-based coaching.
5. How We Use Your Data & Legal Basis
In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR/RODO), we process your data based on the following legal grounds:
- Performance of a Contract: Processing is necessary to provide the services you requested (e.g., cross-device blocking and sync).
- Consent: When you sign up for our waitlist or voluntarily provide mood logs.
- Legitimate Interests: To improve our product, ensure application security, and fix technical issues.
Purpose of processing:
- Provide and maintain the cross-device blocking service.
- Synchronize app usage and notification data across all your devices to calculate and display your total application usage time, overall screen time, and notification trends.
- Analyze your habits to provide personalized "Dopamine Analysis" and CBT-based coaching related to notification patterns and their correlation with app usage.
- Product Improvement: We use anonymized and aggregated usage and notification data to improve our algorithms, identify general usage trends, and enhance the effectiveness of our wellbeing tools for all users.
- Synchronize your settings and limits across your various devices.
- Send you updates about the product and Early Bird offers (if subscribed to the waitlist).
6. Third-Party Sharing and Data Transfers
Our Commitment to Your Privacy:
- No Data Sales: We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information or usage data to third parties. We are committed to never selling our customers' data.
- No Advertising: Unhook is an ad-free experience. We do not use your data for advertising purposes, and we will not monetize the application through advertisements.
We share data only with trusted service providers necessary for our operations (e.g., Google Firebase, Google Sheets). While we prioritize servers located within the European Economic Area (EEA) (e.g., Firestore EU region), some services may involve data processing in the United States. In such cases, we ensure that our providers comply with standard contractual clauses and provide an adequate level of data protection.
7. Children's Privacy
Unhook is not intended for use by children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we become aware that a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete such information immediately.
8. Data Security and Retention
We prioritize the security of your information and implement robust measures to protect it:
- Encryption in Transit: All data sent between your devices and our servers is protected using industry-standard encryption protocols (SSL/TLS).
- Encryption at Rest: Your data is stored securely using advanced encryption methods to ensure it remains protected while stored on our servers.
- Retention: We retain your data only for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with our digital wellbeing services.
